Learn about esport and how to get profit

This article is based on my own experiences as an E-sports bettor on League Of Legends and Overwatch which seeks to share a passion and does not aim in any way to be exhaustive. It gives some thoughts on how to bet on E-sports by highlighting the notable differences with the so-called "traditional" sports. My vision exposed via this webpage is obviously open to any discussion allowing to make it evolve and to improve it.

This article introduces E-sports to people who have little or no knowledge of this new emerging discipline. Unfortunately, it is often not highlighted by the mass media in relation to the important evolution of this phenomenon in recent years. It will deal with the strategic aspect of sports betting, ignoring the mental aspect which I believe is common to other types of betting.

Betting E-Sport, a discipline like no other

Differences between "traditional" betting and E Sports betting

E-Sports being a discipline in its own right, there are some notable differences in the sports betting market compared to traditional sports betting:

  • Professional teams and players train about 6 days a week and at least 8 hours a day, in Korea and China these hours are greatly exceeded. The players are not or hardly impacted by repeated matches. Fatigue is therefore not very important to take into account because it is only mental and not physical. It happens all the same that some players burn out or are less efficient at the end of the season when they have played a lot of games during the year.
  • In soccer the rules are the same since the dawn of time but in E-Sports to make the game live (managed by a publisher who tries to sell) it must adapt to its market. It is therefore necessary to constantly bring novelty, the games evolve almost constantly with the updates and the strategies to win also. You have to follow these changes to know which team is going to be at an advantage and which team is going to be at a disadvantage, according to the different styles of games that exist.
  • The players are usually very young, on Hearthstone a 13 year old has already won a tournament. If the competition is online, the young players will have little or no problem with pressure because they will be comfortable at home but if the competition is played on stage then this criterion takes all its importance. Some teams are also very strong online and tend to fall apart offline.
  • In many games the games are played in several rounds, commonly called BOX (best of X maps, for example in BO3 the first one who wins 2 maps wins the match). These rounds can be played on different maps and therefore the strategies to win can change. A team that may be very strong on one map may not be so strong on the next.
  • There are competitions almost all year round, there are few off-peak periods and therefore it is possible to make a large volume of bets. Once again, the publishers are behind this choice, it is necessary to make the game live through E Sport to sell and create a fervor around the game.
  • The bookmakers have great difficulty in evaluating the difference in level between two teams because of the criteria mentioned above. They only use statistics and the "image" of a team to establish odds.
  • The ratings often arrive shortly before the game. Sometimes it is only 2 hours before the game which can be annoying and make us miss values. So you have to be reactive on the appearance of the odds to maximize your value before the odds drop.

The skills of an eSport bettor

The main skill of an E Sport bettor is for me to know the game on which he bets on the tip of his fingers, its lexicon and the different evolutions of the game and even to anticipate them. For that there is no secret, you have to watch a lot of games to understand the different strategies and repetitive patterns of the game. You have to be able to anticipate the scenario of the game from the beginning to the end and the choices made by the coaches. You need to be aware of the metagame (the most common and often the most effective strategy used to win) and known strategies to complete your scenario. It is also necessary to be aware of the game's news and what the developers want to do.

An esport arena

The knowledge of the teams and the different competitions on which the bettor bets comes second for me. It is important to know the teams you are betting on and their playing styles. Each team often has its own strategies of predilection, more or less effective depending on the circumstances. This is a determining factor for betting on "facts of the game", such as Over/Under.

You also have to be comfortable with all the social networks through which players, commentators and analysts communicate a lot. As you know, information asymmetry is a huge factor in the sports betting world. If you have information that the bookmaker does not necessarily have, it will be easy to detect the values. It is also necessary to know the different sites that provide information about sports betting in general.

Understanding and interpreting the statistics is necessary to make the right choice of bets. However, statistics should not be the main motivation for choosing a particular bet, but only a support point. It is also necessary to know the good statistics sites that have relevant data, which can sometimes be difficult to find on certain games.
